Intro

Well it looks like this issue has gone to the dogs...no, not really but there are a few tips and articles for all those dog lovers out there in our community! This month has been a real mixed bag of summer trying its hardest to hold on to the last of the warm weather and autumn doing its best to change the seasons. As always though there are still many events around the area that families can attend and enjoy those last few rays of sunshine. With daylight savings coming to an end, now might be a good time to do some extra work around the home and garden to ensure the colder months are spent cozying up in front of the fire and not cleaning out gutters during torrential downpours like we had thanks to Cyclone Pam. Enjoy this issue and please feel free to email myself or Graham if you have any interesting news or events you would like to share with the community. As always, stay safe and be kind. Sarah, Editor.

Local Board Update March
Another round of public feedback sessions draws to a close with the Mayor’s Draft Long Term Plan – the plan that sets the budgets and direction of Auckland for the next ten years. The biggest question for locals seems to be – are we being listened too? There is hope that things may change and recognition of the significant growth in population is at last attracting some overdue attention to our needs from City Hall. The Mayor attended the ‘Have Your Say’ event in Kumeu and heard the issues loud and clear. Following on from this there are indications that starting Master Planning for Kumeu and the surrounds may happen sooner rather than later – at the time of writing we are  waiting on confirmation of how this might work and when but there is hope for optimism. The Local Board has asked for over a year for planning to be updated to reflect the rapid change in growth - now that message has been backed up by the community we are getting some attention. Watch this space. The Board has been focused on streamlining how it works to speed up projects. An example of this can be seen in the decision to directly fund the Kumeu Arts Centre to carry out overdue maintenance work. They have been waiting for some time for the roof to be repaired on the Council owned building and completion of internal improvements. The high cost of doing this  through Council’s ‘preferred supplier’ process and the length of time to get a result saw the Board short-circuit the issue with a direct grant to the Arts Centre. This is an idea we think may work in some situations even though it is a departure from ‘business as usual’. If you are having issues with getting community based projects off the ground and bogged down in bureaucracy, please get in touch with me and I will see what I can do to help… Phelan Pirrie email: phelan.pirrie@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz mobile: 021 837 167.

Hillary trail for fun
Auckland is home to some fantastic walking trails and there is no better than the Hillary Trail. A brochure can be downloaded online or picked up from Auckland Parks at the Arataki Visitor Centre. Over the next few months we will be featuring a number of spectacular scenic shots that hopefully will inspire you to get out with the family and enjoy this amazing area we live in. As a one day adventure or a five day excursion this provides fun, fitness and bonding for one and all. DAY 1 - The trail starts at the Arataki Visitor Centre on Scenic Drive. If you are catching public transport to Titirangi, you can walk 6.6km from there to Arataki via Exhibition Drive and the Beveridge Tracks. From Arataki the trail descends into the Nihotupu Valley and onwards to Huia. The first night is spent at the Karamatura campground. 12.5km, 4-5 hours from the Arataki Visitor Centre 19.1km, 5.5-6.5 hours from Titirangi. DAY 2 - Starts with a steep climb out of the Karamatura Valley, a subsequent descent down to the Manukau Heads and along the spectacular Omanawanui Track. Autumn at The Riverhead
Now that daylight saving is right upon us, we should be thankful for the amazing summer we’ve just had and focus on all good things we love about the cooler months…wearing boots, popping on that favourite coat, the camaraderie of big rugby games and snuggling up in front of a roaring fire. The best thing about the venue at The Riverhead is that it does winters just about as well as it does Summers. Not only do we have a new menu this month, we have a brand new website which shows off our three distinct areas far better than our original website did. Now it’s even easier to navigate to the area which best suits the experience you’re after at The Riverhead. Check it out on www.theriverhead.co.nz. You can even make a booking online to try out our new autumn menu. This year we’re looking forward to ‘Sunday Live’ in our new Boat House building, where the weather won’t dampen our spirits. If you haven’t seen our new Boat House venue yet, pop on down on a Sunday afternoon and enjoy the festive atmosphere and free music.

Terra Nova planning
The team at Terra Nova Planning are delighted that the Crabbfields development in Riverhead has won the Best Street Award for 2014. Terra Nova was engaged by Ron and Lynne Crabb to assist them with obtaining the residential zoning, layout design, and planning and resource consent management through the Auckland Council for the 44 lot subdivision in this very high amenity location. The success of the development can also be put down to the Crabb’s commitment to producing a high quality, pedestrian and cycle friendly residential neighbourhood that sets a high standard for Riverhead.

Winter Time for Senior Dogs
As the weather starts to cool, it is important to think about the impact it has on exercising our senior dogs (especially those with arthritis). However, there are a number of things you can do to keep your senior dog mentally and physically active over the winter months. If you are heading outdoors for a walk, two or three short walks a day is often better than one long walk which can make your dog stiff after resting from it. Mental stimulation can be given in the form of feeding meals from puzzle toys. Even just a car ride can provide mental stimulation. Exercise therapy (static exercises, like Pilates but for dogs) helps to maintain/build muscle and improve balance as well as providing mental stimulation and can be done indoors. Hydrotherapy can also provide good exercise with low impact on arthritic joints. Tania Evans - Canine Exercise Therapist. www.pawsitivelifestyles.co.nz.

It has been several months since I last rambled about this but a timely reminder is needed. Most electrical items from your TV to the toaster, and equipment from the chainsaw to the ride-on mower have a serial number somewhere on it. The trick is to find it, record it and photograph the item. It continues to frustrate Police when hardworking, honest members of the community, through no fault of their own, become victims of a burglary and Police are required to take a report from them which has no information that will lead to the identification of their property should we locate it. Set aside a couple of hours this weekend to identify and mark your property in some way. Not only will it help us in identifying your stuff it will also assist in your insurance claims which by my own observations are regularly underestimated. Often the most sentimental and underestimated items taken from a
home are jewellery; it is recommended that you photograph it all if you want at least a fighting chance of getting it back. Help us to help you, make the time and make a list. To make things even easier a website has been created under partnership with NZ Police to record your assets online. Please check it out at snap.org.nz. Should you want any assistance on this matter please contact the Kumeu Station on 09 412 5194. In an emergency dial 111. For more information contact

On the 28th February 2015 Prime Ministers John Key and Tony Abbott met the two teams of fire fighters from the Auckland Rural Fire Authority to thank them for their contribution in the 2014 Australian bush fires. Tony Abbott is a qualified fire fighter in Australia and still goes out on the truck once or twice a year. Tony formally thanked each of the fire fighters and presented a cap from his local Brigade. We in return presented him a New Zealand Rural Fire cap. This was also an opportunity to show both Prime Minsters the new fire appliance for Great Barrier Island and to explain to them what it’s like to be both a urban and rural Fire Brigade like Waitakere Fire. In light of Cyclone Pam I would strongly recommend that you visit the Auckland Civil Defence website as it has a lot of very useful information on preparing for an event such as a cyclone. www.aucklandcivildefence.org.nz/

Changes to KiwiSaver First Home Buyer features. There are some exciting new changes to the KiwiSaver first home buyer features. These changes are planned to come into effect from 1 April 2015. Below is a summary of the main changes:
• The KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy will be replaced with a KiwSaver HomeStart Grant. For those who are eligible this will double the level of the grant if buying or building a new house and increase the price limits for all grant applicants.
• Larger KiwiSaver first home purchase withdrawals will be available, which include the member tax credits. This means after three years of KiwiSaver membership first home buyers will now be able to withdraw all of their KiwiSaver funds except the $1,000 kick start.
• Expanding eligibility for Welcome Home Loans by aligning the house price caps with the new KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant house caps. Auckland has risen from $485,000 to $550,000.
• Ability to pay the grant out at beginning of the process to assist with purchasing properties off the plans. So if you’re a first home buyer and keen to build please contact us for a no obligation discussion. 09 411 9251 or 027 411 9255 or david@davidllyodmortgages.co.nz

Same Same But Different
Mr Binz has added a new vehicle to their fleet – 0800 GrabIt – same same but different. Same great service, local knowledge, drivers and the same expertise in removing your unwanted bulk rubbish and materials. As well as our bin services over the years we also have offered a bulk removal service with one of our Crane mounted trucks equipped with a clam shell grab. The increase in demand for this service has seen this new vehicle join the fleet late 2014. We can remove that bulk pile of rubbish easier, quicker and safer than usual methods of removal. We have 35 cubic metre capacity; a standard large jumbo bin is 9 cubic metres. The best thing about this service is that you don’t have to handle that pile of rubbish again – get the job done by calling 0800 GrabIt. Great also for removing vegetation, plants, hedges and flax in particular. With a reach of 10 metres from the truck, we can get to vegetation without damaging any of your other plants. Recent jobs have included soil removal from sites with poor access for diggers; rock placements for landscapers; trees removed for arborists; and crop removal from glasshouse growers. All done easier, faster and safer. So if you have any piles of rubbish or material/product needing to be moved, give Stephen a call on 0800 GrabIt (0800 472 248) “making the hard jobs easy”.

Woodhill District Camp
On Auckland Anniversary weekend the Brownies and Guides from Woodhill district attended a Dad and Daughter Camp at Motu Moana, Greenbay. The weather was hot and sunny and the girls and their dads enjoyed archery, abseiling, a climbing wall, a confidence course and flying fox, a water slide, making balistas and rope bridges, singing around a campfire and toasting  marshmallows, a night stalking game and many other exciting outdoor activities. Great fun was had by all. The Brownies and Guides are currently accepting new members interested in the outdoors, and who enjoy helping others and looking for new challenges. We are also looking for new leaders who enjoy helping girls to grow and see them reach their potential. Watch out for our girls in March and April as we will be selling Guide Biscuits. Look out for our girls in pink or blue at various stalls. A number of shops are also selling on our behalf. The funds raised from these sales help train our leaders and provide equipment for the District. Soljans estate winery celebrates 13th year of Berba Harvest celebration
Come and join the team at Soljans Winery in Kumeu Wine Country over Easter weekend; 4th - 6th April, to celebrate the Croatian grape harvest “Berba”. “Berba”, defined as “Harvest” was a festival that started in Croatia back in the 18th century to celebrate the picking and gathering of grapes. Hailed from the beautiful island of Hvar in Croatia, the Soljans family is proud to continue their family tradition by bringing the fun and lively Croatian harvest celebration to Auckland for the 13th time since relocating to their popular winery site located at the gateway of Kumeu, just 20 minutes’ drive from downtown Auckland. Have you ever desired to do some grape crushing the traditional way using your feet? Some people can only imagine themselves doing that after reading a book or an article depicting the subject. However, at “Berba” you can discard the imagination and experience the action of stomping the grapes underfoot. Held at 2:15pm daily over the Easter weekend, it is a great opportunity not to be missed! You can treat yourself to a well-earned free wine tasting at the cellar door, try new wines that have just been released and the refreshing “Novo Vino” (new wine) juice that has just started fermenting. You can even join the owner, Tony Soljan for winery tours that will run all 3 days at 11am and 1:30pm, $5 per person. Or simply relax in the award winning café and enjoy the seasonal fresh menu plus traditional style Croatian food platters and samples of the Croatian delicacy, Pašurates. Children can choose their favourites from the dedicated kids menu in the café, enjoy the free Easter eggs and have their face painted. Don’t forget to visit our lovely GIFT SHOP located within the cellar door, you will always find something to take away – a treat for  yourself or for the person that has everything! Music is the soul of life to Croatian people. Watch Dalmatian Kolo dancers performing on Easter Sunday at 3pm and live guitar performances from Dean Te Paa on Sunday and Monday, 12pm – 3pm. Experience “Berba”, experience Croatia at Soljans Estate Winery! EASTER WEEKEND - Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th, Monday 6th April

Progress at Last
On the 16th December 2014 at Soljans Winery, at the meeting NZTA requested of the Kumeu-Huapai Residents & Ratepayers Association, assembled a representative group to represent the District to be able to meet with Engineers of their office and Auckland Transport. The challenge was given to me to select the group that could represent and speak for the area from Brighams Creek, Waimauku, Riverhead, Taupaki & Muriwai. The resulting group is about 20 strong and has a wide range of professional and business skills to bring to any meeting. Members include two representatives of the developers of the Triangle Project, the adjacent Residents & Ratepayers groups, and two members of the Local Board, so hopefully the wider group can achieve more for the District than has been done in the past. The Mayor’s visit to the Arts Centre on March 5th is probably was an eye opener for him. He admitted that he was surprised at the passion of the expression and issues raised by the community. As a result of that meeting, he asked to meet with the group on Saturday 14th March (in the Auckland Mayor’s Office). That meeting was attended by two Board members, Penny Webster and 9 from the community. The Mayor welcomed the group and indicated that the Kumeu-Huapai area had been left behind by his Council and the previous Rodney Council. He gave an undertaking to work with the group to resolve the infrastructure problems in our area. Knowing that the Triangle submission closes on the 27th March, Len Brown promised a response to the group by the 20th March. Looking overall, it appears that the Structure Plan and associated Issues will be advanced ahead of time which can only be a good thing for the whole community. It appears progress is being made at last on infrastructure. For the communities’ sake, I really hope so. Why you should list with Mike Pero Real Estate
Reason #17, Security is never compromised, you will know when we are coming, and no key is required. Security is a high priority for all our Property Owners and rightly so. At Mike Pero Real Estate we do not operate a “free for all” viewing system. Nor do we operate a padlock or digital lock box system that puts your home at risk to unwelcome visitors and casual viewers, or opportunist burglars. The more people that have access to your home the greater potential for your home to have uninvited guests or random viewings, or worse. At Mike Pero Real Estate we have a specialist that looks after both you and your property. You will have a phone conversation before-viewing and after-viewing of the property. Times are suitable to you and agreed in advance. In this way we fully respect that in most instances this is your home first and your investment second and with this in mind we communicate dates, times and agreed access. With Mike Pero Real Estate your specialist is on site and vigilant, managing the possible purchasers while ensuring the purchaser has the ability to engage in private conversation and reflection. This is a craft that puts Mike Pero Real Estate ahead of other real estate brands and a reason you should have Mike Pero Real Estate on your short list of real estate brands. FROM THE RED CHAIR
If you get a panel of property experts and ask them to speculate about the future of house prices in Auckland and the property hot spots in the future you would expect some similarity of answers. Not so. The New Zealand Herald canvased opinion from QV’s Andrea Rush, REINZ CEO Helen O’Sullivan, Property Investors Association Boss, Andrew Bruce and Financial Analyst, Bernard Hickey but the answers will surprise you. On the topic of future house prices, Andrea, Andrew and Bernard said you should expect increases up to double digits per year because supply is not able to keep pace with demand. The common theme is there is just not enough resource to build enough new homes. On the other hand, Helen said that in 12 months we would see an increase in supply and prices will plateau. I am sorry to say that new building consents are half that of ten years ago, we are going backwards not forwards. Regarding hot property areas we had a wider gap, Andrea said a 2-3 bedroom townhouse was a sure bet, Helen indicated buy in neighborhood’s that were cheaper, we saw this in Riverhead recently when the median price went from $375,000 to $650,000 in 12 months. Andrew said that next to new motorway infrastructure would yield good returns; certainly Greenhithe has been testimony to this fact. Bernard was a traditionalist indicating
close to CBD with a prime school zone. So with this in mind what are my predictions, well I am going with the double digits in some areas, we are seeing amazing growth in areas like Massey, Ranui, Swanson, Waitakere Township and this will continue. And on the topic of hot property areas, I would look for freestanding weatherboard homes on big sites, they are easy to move, or rotate, easy to renovate and buyers understand them. Look for a small house on a big site, these are gold mines for renovation or add-ons. Avoid townhouse developments where parking is compromised and living is cramped. But whatever you do, get onto the property market however you can and hang on. The market is not finished growing, the market does not have the ability at present to satisfy demand. Graham McIntyre, Brand and Territory Owner, Mike Pero Kumeu. Ph 0800 900 700, see www.grahammcintyre.co.nz.

Bespoke Building at its Best
Are you concerned that a lot of the new homes being built in Kumeu look the same or look like they came out of the building companies standard plan range. Could this affect the resale value of your new home in years to come? At Build7 every home we build is unique to you the owner. You will never see your house built anywhere in New Zealand. Our unique design service with our  architectural and engineering partners means we can meet you on site, help you make a decision regarding your site, take a design brief from you, with our expert advice guiding you through the engineering designing and budgeting process. We will then design floor plans, elevations and renders sited on your site in accordance with your design brief and budget. What makes this service so unique is that we are able to provide all of this architectural and engineering service free of charge; that’s our investment in the relationship. Why pay your architect or building company thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to reach the same stage? Contact Steve Karpik on mobile 027 607 0707, or email skarpik@build7.co.nz or visit our website build7.co.nz

HELP SAVE OUR COURTS CLUB BUILDING!!
We desperately need your help to tie us over for a spell! Our very own (community owned and managed) Riverhead Courts Club building is in some temporary financial strife, and finding it difficult to pay the Insurance and Power accounts at present. Reason being that we cannot yet offer this building “For Hire” and make an income to support such bills… because the building is not yet connected to a Water and Wastewater solution. We are working through these needed connections with Council, but as we all know so well, this takes SO VERY long for any result to actually occur! If anyone has some compassion in regards to our plight, and can spare $5 or $10, then this will all make a big difference to us and help us here in need! Please call Heather on 09 412 6413 or email heathlun@xtra.co.nz for more information or if you can provide any financial assistance. Yes, we would really like some benefactors! For those of you that may be new to the area, our building is over 100 years old and is the original Riverhead School classroom, built by locals over a century ago, and relocated by us locals to its present site at the War Memorial Park a few years ago, for use as a community facility. Can anyone out there provide any financial assistance? Any payment from businesses can be recognised with a receipt. Thanks to you all – in advance! Karen Body – Rowdy Riverhead Resident.

National house price median up 3.6 per cent
House prices recovered from their summer siesta last month, and sales numbers were the highest for a February since 2007. The national median house price was $430,000, up 0.9 per cent on the previous month and 3.6 per cent than a year ago. That was an improvement on January, when prices slipped 5.3 per cent on the previous month, although for the year they were stronger at 6 per cent. However, it was on the sales front that February was strongest, up 42 per cent on the previous month and 12 per cent higher than a year ago. Seven regions saw prices rise, led by Auckland where the median rose 14 per cent to $675,000, an increase of $83,000 on the year before. Excluding the distortionary effects of the hot Auckland market, the national median house price was flat at $350,000. The Real Estate Institute, which provides the figures, said the surge in sales was a little stronger than normal, but partly reflected a catch-up effect from weaker sales in January. REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne said the flatness of house prices when Auckland was excluded was telling. “This underlines again the view that there are two distinct real estate markets in New Zealand – Auckland and the rest of the country.” She said that while politicians and policymakers focused on Auckland region’s housing supply problems, they were right to think about whether new policies would have an adverse effect on the rest of the country. House sales rose across the board, but Waikato-Bay of Plenty had the largest increase, with a near 62 per cent increase in sales on a monthly basis. Sales picked up by nearly 59 per cent in Canterbury/Westland and by 54 per cent in Hawkes Bay.

Let’s declutter!! Decluttering requires a willingness to eliminate the unnecessary. It means ruthlessly pruning out everything that you don’t need to make room for the things that matter. It is as much a material change of lifestyle as a mental one. The more you eliminate, the more you will treasure and use what’s left over. A more minimalistic approach to decorating allows for more visual and physical space. People are naturally attracted to clutter-free homes. A few decluttering tips: change the junk room into a guest room or study; clear kitchen clutter and create space for the items you use most often; create a haven in your living room by removing all unnecessary items; remember your dining room is just that, a dining room – take out your computer desk and any other paraphernalia that is inhibiting the space. Rents in NZ up 6.5 per cent year-on-year
KEEP ON CLIMBING: The most expensive place to rent is Auckland, up 5.6 per cent at $475 a week. Residential rents took a breather in February, but were still a healthy 6.5 per cent higher than a year ago, according to a monthly index by Trade Me Property. The median weekly rent across the country rose to $410 a week, just below last month’s record $420 a week. On a monthly basis, however, the pace of rental increases slowed from the 9 per cent increase recorded in January. Trade Me, which collates its figures from listings on its website, said the rental market appeared to be tipped in favour of landlords because supply was tight. “We’ve seen a noticeable fall in new rental properties coming onto the market since the start of the year, down 12 per cent across the country,” said the head of Trade Me Property, Nigel Jeffries. He believed landlords were finally responding to the rise in property prices, especially in Auckland. Landlords were looking to align rents with property values and improve their yields. Jeffries said median rents have risen nearly 21 per cent over the last five years, up from $340 to $410. But the majority of this increase has been in the past two years, jumping $40 since February 2013. BROKEN DOWN BY THE REGIONS - Regionally, 12 regions saw year-on-year increases in rent, led by Marlborough which was up 15.5 per cent. Only Gisborne and the West Coast saw rents fall compared to a year ago, down 10 per cent and 2 per cent respectively, and Otago was unchanged. The most expensive place to rent was Auckland, up 5.6 per cent at $475 a week, followed by Canterbury (up 7.1 per cent to $450) and Wellington (up 5 per cent to $420) Rents were up 2.2 per cent in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, 2.9 per cent in Nelson, and 5.8 per cent in Hawkes Bay. Jeffries said the Christchurch rental market showed signs of easing, having been tight on the supply side for the last two years. “In February we saw that annual rental growth was pretty subdued. This is underpinned by more listings hitting the market and alleviating the pressure.” Rental listings in Christchurch were up 16 per cent on a year ago, the highest level since May 2011.

More Dogs being trained thanks to Bayer Cares Foundation
The New Zealand Epilepsy Assist Dog Trust, based in Kumeu, can now train more dogs to assist people living with epilepsy, thanks to a donation from the global Bayer Cares Foundation. More than $4500 has been granted by the Foundation towards the selection and purchase of three young dogs as well as the training from an animal behaviourist. The dogs will be trained to help with daily tasks and to ensure the surroundings are safe and injuries are prevented when a person is having a seizure. Bayer New Zealand veterinarian Mary Valintine applied for the donation from the Bayer Cares Foundation, Germany, which provides funding for community development projects in neighbourhood areas of Bayer sites. About NZ$415,000 is distributed annually to 78 winning projects around the world. Valintine says she is thrilled that the New Zealand Epilepsy Assist Dog Trust was able to receive the donation. “It is so wonderful to be able to help three more people live a confident, fulfilled and happy life. The dogs are not only the tool for independence but they are also great companions. “It makes me proud to be a part of a work place like Bayer that supports the people in our community to live happy, healthier lives,” Valintine adds. According to the Epilepsy Assist Dog Trust, the unexpected loss of consciousness from epilepsy can lead to a loss of self-confidence and social isolation for those affected. The assist dogs give those with epilepsy a tool to have confidence to work, travel on public transport and socialise with members of the public knowing that they will be kept safe if a seizure occurs.

5 Ways To Improve Digestion
Relax and eat slowly - it is hard for our body to digest food when we are on the run, all the blood moves to our skeletal muscles in a flight or fight reaction. By relaxing blood can move towards our digestive system supporting healthy digestion. Chew your food - remember your stomach doesn’t have teeth! Make sure your food is well chewed before swallowing. Lemon water - upon rising drink a small  glass of water with 1/2 lemon squeezed in, 30-45min before breakfast. It will help increase the digestive juices that break our food down for energy (these reduce as we age). Reduce drinks at meal times - save big drinks for between meals. Too much fluid with your meal will dilute digestive juices making it harder to digest food. Increase fermented foods - to support a healthy digestive system add fermented foods daily - yogurt, kefir etc. We offer natural support for digestive disorders and any other health condition through diet, lifestyle and supplementation. Need Internet access in other building what about your mobile phone reception?
With the Internet being such a persuasive tool for many users and businesses, the need to connect at fast reliable speeds is becoming more and more important as more services are hosted on the web. There are still places where Internet over the fixed phone line is not available. If it is, often Internet is not available in the whole residence for other services like working from home office, connecting other family members or workers to the internet, smart TV internet access, etc. In other cases there can be great Internet access in the main building but outbuildings have no access to the Internet. IT@Hand has installed Internet access to many homes and offices where there is no Internet coming in over the traditional cable. This comes in over the telco mobile network and is often installed with external antennas if the reception is low to increase speed and stability. We use great tools to get an estimate of what result can be expected based on previous installations in the area and coverage maps etc. Just ask us for more detail for your area. For locations that have great Internet access but need Internet in other rooms of the same building or in outbuildings on the same property, buildings like home offices, milking sheds, minor dwellings or man caves etc, we can install cost effective solutions that have no ongoing running costs. This above is all for access to the Internet. If you have low or no cell phone coverage in your home or office and you get a lot of missed calls and txts, you may be losing business opportunities. We have elegant solutions available for increasing cell phone coverage at your location so that you can be contactable and responsive to the people you need to communicate with. For more please come to IT@Hand Computer Services on 322 Main Road in Huapai (opposite Mike Pero). Phone 09 412 9227 or email huapai@itathand.co.nz.

A little bit of History
THE KUMEU – HUAPAI CARNIVAL 10TH MARCH 1917 - The Kaipara and Waitemata Echo. The Patriotic Sports and Garden Fete was the scene of general attraction at Kumeu on March 10th 1917. The Carnival Committee in co-operation with the local branches of the Farmers’ Union held a Red Cross Fete in Mr R.Barnes’ paddock. The weather was ideal and numerous displays of flags waving across the grassy fields, located the spot where the busy, energetic workers greeted the visitors. In the unavoidable absence of His Worship the Mayor of Auckland, the Mayoress (Mrs Gunson) opened the Carnival, and gave a neat speech on our duty to our boys and our country, amidst cheering and applause. Mrs Gunson declared the Carnival open at 10.00am and numerous stall-holders stepped forward into a business position and being dressed in white with white caps with red crosses, added an inviting appearance to the well-kept stalls. The gift stall, in charge of Misses Bews was very attractive and the articles numerous and of excellent quality. The net income from this stall being £40.0.0. [$80.00]. The produce stall was in charge of Mrs.C.Boord was also well supplied and did a big business. The competition stall was all that could be desired and every article that was entered for competition was given to be sold for the fund. The soft drink stall was responsible for selling some 46 dozen [550+] drinks. The tea kiosk, in charge of Mrs Boucher and Phillipson was attended by many workers and a splendid lunch and afternoon tea was set before each caller at a cost of 6d [5c]. This stall raised £28 [$56.00] nett profit. The ice cream stall was a busy corner and resulted in a good return, the Misses Griffen being in charge. The children’s sports were a very enjoyable feature. The events for boys and girls under-16 years of age were eagerly competed and the winners were awarded a valuable prize, given by the Hobsonville Branch of the Farmer’s Union. The adult events were numerous and competition keen. The sheaf tossing and tug-o-war (farmers v. all-comers) were of particular interest. Many of the prize-winners paid their awards to the Red Cross Fund. At about 2.30 when the stalls were in full swing and the sports at their best, the air was filled with sweet harmonious notes from the Auckland Garrison Artilliary Band and the carefully selected programme added much to the pleasure of the great throng of people present. In the evening Mr Parr C.M.G. M.P. gave a very interesting address on the Army and Navy. The Kumeu Hall was packed and at the close of the address the Chairman (Mr Boucher) moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer, which was carried by general applause. The President, Miss Bews and Hon Secretaries Miss Bews and Mr Phillipson, audited account of income and forwarded the sum of £160.13.7½d [$321.36] to the Red Cross Fund (Auckland Branch) and announced that when all money is available, the sum will amount to over £180.0.0 [$360.00].

Colloidal Silver is a great investment in your health
Taking Colloidal Silver daily is like having a second Immune System and acts as a preventative. Coming into the winter season is a great time to start taking it. Unlike Colloidal Silver antibiotics are only effective against a limited number of bacteria and fungi not VIRUSES! Colloidal Silver is the only form of silver that can be used safely as a supplement, it acts as a catalyst in disabling a particular enzyme and cripples the enzyme causing suffocation. Biomedical research shows no disease-causing organism, bacteria, virus or fungus can live for more than a few minutes in the presence of even minute traces of silver. Silver is a powerful antibiotic that has been used for thousands of years with no harmful side effects ever having been observed and works very fast, in 6 minutes or less on contact within the body. Colloidal Silver is the strongest, safest, broad spectrum antibiotic known to man. The Ancient Greeks ate from silver utensils, plates, goblets, and stored their food in silver containers and they were rarely ever sick. The result being that the silver was slightly worn off and mixed in with their foods, thus keeping them free from any infectious illnesses. Colloidal Silver was used in America from the late 1800’s through until approximately 1938 as a bactericide for over 1200 years. The following are some of the pre 1938 documented uses of silver, particularly the Colloidal form, for the treatment of various conditions and pathogens. Prior to 1938 Colloidal Silver was considered to be one of the mainsatays of antibiotic treatment. The comeback of silver in medicine began in the 1970’s. It is proven to be useful against over 650
different infectious conditions like: Acne, Arthritis, Athletes Food, Bladder Inflammation, Burns, Colitis, Cysitis, Diptheria, Dermatitis, Diabetes, Dysentry, Ear infection, Eustachian Tubes Eczema, Fibrositis, Furunculosis, Impetigo, Influenza, Intestinal Trouble, Keratitis, Leprosy, Lupus, Lymphagitis, Malaria, Menier’s Symptoms, Meningitis, Neurasthenia, Ophthalmology, Canine Parvo Virus, Pneumonia, Pleurisy, Prostate, Quinsiie, Rheumatism, Ringworm, Rhinitis, Scarletina, Schorrhea, Septic Ulcers, Sepsis, Ulcers, Warts, Whooping Cough, Yeast Infections. Why did they put silver pins / plates in for the surgical repair of bones? This was to help in the healing process. Colloidal Silver can be applied directly to the skin, eliminating surface infections with no burning or stinging. The hospitals are beginning to use silver dressings to aid the healing process. Colloidal Silver can also be used in your eyes for eye infections and in a Nasal Spray for allergies, like hayfever and sinuses, as it helps to clear the nasal passages. Colloidal Silver has a high mineral content and is a great healer. Our soils here in New Zealand are depleted of trace minerals; our body requires these trace minerals for a healthy immune system. It supports the immune system by helping to boost the mineral levels in humans. Colloidal Silver is a great digestive and can be used as a water purifier - add 1 Tbsp to 1 Litre of water. Silver containers have been used to prolong the freshness of food. Some of you will remember your Grandmother putting a silver coin in the
milk jug this was to keep the milk from going off or spoiling in the heat. Collloidal Silver should always be stored in an amber glass bottle in a cupboard away from magnetic fields like the television, fridge, microwave, computer etc as these magnetic fields can interfere and destroy the electrical charge on the Silver Colloids. A plastic or glass measuring spoon, cup or dispenser should always be used as the Colloidal Silver will react with a metal spoon as the charge will be affected. A plastic sprayer can be used on an amber glass bottle. Colloidal Silver is virtually tasteless, with no smell and is non stinging to sensitive tissue areas. The recommended dosage for adults is a 5ppm (5 parts per million) solution – 5 mls taken three times daily, this dose can be halved for children. Precautions: - Do not take Silver if you have an allergy to silver (i.e. if you cannot wear silver jewellery). Pregnant or breastfeeding women or children under two years of age, you should consult your health practitioner first. Agreement or offer?
An offer to buy your house is not an agreement unless you accept the offer. This means an offer can be withdrawn as long as this is communicated from one to the other. An agreement for the sale and purchase of a house must be in writing, signed by both parties and dated accordingly. This means that unlike an offer, you can only withdraw in accordance with the terms of the agreement - usually for non-satisfaction of a particular condition. Importantly, non-satisfaction of the purchasing condition is not always a subjective thing. Rather, non-satisfaction of a builders report by you as purchaser means you must show the vendors what the builders report says. Non-satisfaction of a LIM report allows the vendor an opportunity to rectify the unsatisfactory aspect of the LIM report. This means that you may still be required to perform the agreement if the vendor rectifies accordingly. We recommend that you take legal advice about the sort of conditions in your agreement in order to ensure that you have room to withdraw from an agreement if you find something about the property unsatisfactory to you. Livestock sales report
A very small sale, numbers wise, was well attended by buyers but cattle were harder to sell than previous weeks, except for killable stock which sold extremely well! Whilst cattle on offer were relatively light, prices were good, with steers to $1,420 and heifers $1,110. Boner cows sold extra well to $1,050. The weaner cattle are what struggled a bit, understandable as dry conditions have been unrelenting, however, the rains associated with cyclone Pam started the next day and cautious buyers will perhaps wish they had been a little braver and purchased the very good cattle on offer as it is unlikely they will be seen at such low values again!
CATTLE
Light prime steers $1,240 to $1,420
Other forward steers $1,095 to $1,185
Medium weaner steers $580
Small x bred steers $390 to $405

Good 15 month heifers $910

Cows & calves $1,180
SHEEP
Fat lambs $86 to $116
Store lambs $30 to $73
Ewes $69 to $80
Rams $20 to $60

The Power of Dramatic Play
Following on from last month, storytelling and the performing arts focus continues at Jojo’s Childcare for the children and the teachers. We are enjoying watching the flow from the structured sessions to the children’s play and their engagement with the ideas they are learning about. The dress-up areas and boxes are favourites, the children are asking for books and stories not just at quiet times and inside, the beautiful weather has meant group times can be outside which is adding a new dynamic. We are seeing performances develop throughout free-play times and children performing songs and dances for anyone and everyone that will listen. Creating an environment where expression, opinion and interpretation are valued through the dramatic conventions we are all learning about together is developing a real sense of the power of sharing ideas through dramatic play. We are currently have limited spaces becoming available in our over 2 – 3 ½ year olds room so please come in and see us anytime if you would like to meet the team or be added to waitlists for our other age groups. 09 412 3525 – Cnr State Hwy 16 and Oraha Rd – www.jojoschildcare.co.nz

Web content that people will want to read
“Content is King” - this is heard more and more now as businesses compete online. Keep your
website content up-to-date with product updates, new services, newsletters and blogs. Making changes throughout the year is better than all in one go. When it comes to writing content for your website there is much to consider. Some people use copywriters to get a professional look to their content. This gives your website the best start and you can reuse the content for other communications. Depending on your budget you may decide to write the content yourself. You should consider the following tips: Write relevant content; Put conclusions at the beginning; Write only one idea per paragraph; Use action words; Use lists instead of paragraphs; Limit list items to 7 words; Write short sentences; Include internal sub-headings; Make your links part of the copy; Always proofread your work. When you have completed writing your content you will need to get it entered into your website. This in itself can be a stumbling block for many people. Utopia can assist here regardless of the type of website you have. All you need to do is email us your content and we can do the rest. When a shed is not a shed
Often we build things for function and for purpose but really they are about more than purpose, the things we build represent our lifestyle, our living style and our character. No more so than when we talk about sheds. These born for purpose concrete and steel structures deliver choice, be it storage, workshop, gaming or business. Our shed was a reflection of all these things, and KiwiSpan delivered a very fluid and progressive approach to design, construction, council documents and completion. The Karen Body team had a “can do” attitude and even through progressive ballooning of the shed to fit all needs we all came up smiling. If you are thinking about “shedding” I would high recommend Karen Body and her team at KiwiSpan Kumeu. She is not only highly awarded she treats her clients with care and confidence. Graham and Gail, Waitakere Road, Taupaki. For “can do” on a shed, call Karen Body on 0800 870 078.

Kumeu’s Secret Vintage!
Ponder, for a moment, on the word Vintage. In the West it conjures up sentiments of quality wines and classic automobiles from days gone by. One of Kumeu’s lesser known secrets offers another sentimentality – that being an eclectic band of masters of brass instruments. The average age of 72 gives no clue as to the potential in their sounds. Indeed, the melodious tones of the Kumeu Vintage Brass have attracted the attention of some of the finest Auckland and National brass critics. Just before Christmas a past president of another prestigious West Auckland Brass Band was overheard commenting on the impressive sound this band had produced. He had not heard them play previously and was surprised as well as genuinely impressed. That was accolade indeed and the reason is simple. One of three Brass Bands based in Kumeu, Vintage Brass comprises more than 40 of some of New Zealand’s finest players, in the main now retired and seeking the good life and it is our privilege to host them permanently in Kumeu. Defining them simplistically, they do not march, compete or otherwise put themselves under pressure – they’ve all been there, done that and now just want to relax, play music not only for their own pleasure but also so that others may enjoy the fruits of their passion. Such opportunities include the annual Kumeu Show, retirement villages, parks and the like: Check out this address for more information: www.kumeubrass.org.nz/events.php. There are credits galore and an archetypical example is Graeme Gillies, their musical director. Graeme, among many titles and achievements was a member of the National Band of New Zealand – among the world’s highest rated bands. His extreme passion alone has been known to bring a tear to one’s eye – literally. Two others, Mike Shaw and John Gould also carry the same prestigious “National” title. There are ex Royal New Zealand Artillery, Army and Air Force players as well as Navy band players. Not all players come with coveted titles – some are returning to playing after years of absence but all players have backgrounds in NZ community bands and some in British, Canadian and Australian bands as well. Most members travel quite some distance to Kumeu to rehearse. In fact, Doug Rose (Principal Cornet) drives 90km each week to rehearsals. The average experience is 50 years -- such passion only serves to enhance their musicality. Like a Vintage wine, they seemingly improve with age. Like our local classic cars, Kumeu Vintage Brass is a treasure to be seen, heard, enjoyed and applauded and you can do that at no charge in a forthcoming event in The Kumeu Community Hall on April 19 at 2.00pm where they will perform a combined charity concert with their younger brothers (and sisters) in brass, the Kumeu Senior Band. Proceeds of a collection will go towards West Auckland Hospice.

Making the North West Count
There was a good turnout at the public meeting hosted by the North West District Business Association recently in Kumeu with the Public Transport Users Association in support of their campaign to improve rail and public transport. We appreciated having Peter Clark, General
Manager of Strategy & Planning at Auckland Transport attend. It’s been great to see increased attention on the North West from Mayor Len Brown who has made several visits to the area during the Long Term Plan consultation. The Association has been pushing for greater funding for infrastructure improvements on things such as footpaths and roading in the area. We look forward to announcing our new brand for the North West within the next month – we believe we have come up with an exciting proposition which will generate greater exposure for all business and tourism groups as well as the wider North West community so keep an eye out in next month’s Kumeu Courier for more information Contact Gary Holmes Ph: 0274 966 283 or email manager@northwestbusiness.co.nz.

Adobe rolls out web-based tools for wrangling PDFs
Adobe Systems is sending PDFs into the cloud The software maker, which helped to make the portable file format ubiquitous, is rolling out web-based tools for people to create, store and manage documents online. Called Adobe Document Cloud, the service will cost US$15 a month and also give users access to digital signatures, mobile applications and other software for tracking documents. The new product joins Adobe’s cloudbased marketing and creative-design tools and is part of the San Jose, California- based company’s push to generate more sales from internet-based subscriptions instead of software installed on computers. While Adobe’s sales declined after the company began its transition to cloud computing in 2011, revenue has recovered and analysts project that results today will show that sales are on track to climb 18 percent this year. In addition to Adobe, Salesforce.com and Oracle have also sought to boost revenue by adding new cloud-computing services for businesses. Adobe Document Cloud will help businesses reduce their printing and making it easier to sign and modify digital documents, the company said. Users of Adobe Creative Cloud will have access to the new product as part of their subscriptions. E-Signature Technology Adobe added e-signature technology, used to signed official documents via the Web instead of in-person, with the acquisition of EchoSign in 2011. The division that includes Acrobat and EchoSign contributed $795.6 million to the company’s 2014 revenue of $4.15 billion. Adobe said Document Cloud will work with products from Microsoft, whose Office suite of business applications is used to create documents. “Everything we’re trying to do is to make Acrobat and the Adobe cloud a strong companion for Microsoft Office,” Jon Perera, vice president of product management for Document Cloud, said in in an interview. A broader array of products will help Adobe compete against DocuSign, Box and other cloud competitors, according to Melissa Webster, an analyst at IDC. “What’s unique about Adobe here is that it’s bringing a basket of technologies together in one cloud, and you need several technologies to solve this problem,” Webster said. “This could steepen the growth rate for Acrobat and EchoSign, through the addition of cloud and mobile.”

Small is the new big - J5 black Kumeu rugby
Every year teams are born, crafted and created, worked and groomed and then put out to battle on a display of friendship, team spirit and fun adventure. It is about the spirit of individuals and team, and a culture of fitness, effort and goals that starts and is groomed into every team member and every practice, then injected into every game. We understand there will be highs and lows, and wins and loses but through this Kumeu Rugby J5 Black team I have already found good friendships developing, good understanding rising and fitness growing. A big thank you to Kumeu Rugby and North Harbour Rugby District who have a very effective management, coaching and referee process and training program that allows for old rugby leather (like me and Phill) to have a path to re-learning the game, the coaching and the rules, easily and effectively. Anyone that has an interest in join ing Kumeu Rugby should go to http://kumeurugby.co.nz/index. php/our-juniors/.

Six home decor tips for renters
An increasing portion of the population are becoming locked out of the property market, especially in Auckland, and many New Zealanders are citing longterm renting as their only option. So many are now seeking a better rental experience, and are looking to the Government to action policies - such as rental WOF checks and restrictions on capital gains. But politics aside, what can you do to make your rental experience a more positive one? BYO: Bring your own design flair to a neutral rental home space. Many renters feel they don’t have permission to decorate, but approaching your landlord about making small but significant changes to the decor can be an option. But if that isn’t viable, here are six tips on how to make your rented abode feel a little more like home. 1. Having a clear vision of the style you want is a good way to see beyond the limitations of the room itself. Don’t worry about the colour of the walls or floor, because a consistent look throughout the home will overshadow those permanent fixtures. 2. Purchase furniture and homewares that can be configured in different ways – such as a modular sofa, or smaller occasional side tables – so that they are more likely to fit in a variety of room sizes. Rather than a knee-jerk reaction to each new rental space, try to be consistent in your purchases to create an overall design aesthetic. Then when you move you will be able to recreate your decor with little effort or expense. 3. Favourite art pieces, framed or unframed, can hide imperfect walls, and create a focal point for a room. It will also help give you a foundation for colour and design. These can also add a pop of unexpected colour, avoiding the need to match the home’s existing decor. 4. Rugs make quick work of dated flooring, and can define spaces in open-plan areas, while hallrunner and entry mats can bring colour and freshness to an otherwise neutral or unwelcoming part of the house. 5. Rental bathrooms can often be trouble spots, as they can be expensive for landlords to update. Put aside a small budget to update your bathroom – adding a new shower curtain, bright towels and fresh flowers are an inexpensive way to refresh the space. Also consider adding some colour through an art print and/or bright bathroom accessories. 6. Changing up the curtains not only creates a visual impact, it also adds warmth. Look for DIY thermal drapes at department stores for an easy and quick change to the existing (or nonexistent) drapery. With more Kiwis citing life-long renting as an option, we need to reject the “student flat” mentality and take pride in our homes, however temporary. By making small positive changes to a rented property, you can enjoy the space you live in right now.
